UNDERSTANDING THE RISE —
Kundalini is not a mystery.
It’s a deeply human experience.

Welcome to Kundalini Central
The phenomenon of “Kundalini,” life force energy rising rapidly through the body, is one of the most misunderstood events in our culture today. Visit the eastern hemisphere, and it’s no secret. Many people simply expect their kundalini to awaken at some point. It’s not shrouded in fear or catastrophe. It’s an awareness that reaches a depth not felt before, into the Energy Field which moves through and around our bodies.
In the west, particularly in the U.S., it can feel threatening, especially to certain religious frameworks, because it involves feeling higher consciousness move through the body. How you name that is entirely your own. You might call it Source, Higher Power, the Divine, Creator, Jesus Christ, Allah, God, Lord, Infinity. The name matters less than the experience itself.
Many religious traditions have cautioned against body awareness practices like yoga or meditation. Some have gone as far as condemning the body itself as dangerous or “evil.” This doesn’t correspond to many people’s direct experience, and it can be both misleading and genuinely harmful. The body is our vehicle for this life. It is the only home we will ever know. Paying attention to it means you’ll actually notice when something doesn’t feel right, and you can investigate it, rather than waiting for illness to force the conversation.
WHAT AN AWAKENING CAN BRING
Less ego –> More clarity
Less distraction –> More positivity
Less confusion –> More happiness
I’ve worked with Kundalini energy for decades. Its emergence is one of the most exhilarating, thrilling events we feel as human beings. When an awakening is understood and welcomed, it can clear the way for the most profound and positive life changes imaginable.
Many people move through a Kundalini emergence quietly, in reverence of their own experience. Their energy becomes a positive influence on those around them, even in chance encounters, without having to do anything deliberate. Since my own awakening, a day rarely passes without someone commenting on the energy they feel from me, even strangers who can’t quite name what they’re noticing. I’ve heard, “Wow, you!” and “What have you got going on?” Young children especially seem to sense it: “You’re bright!” or “You’re big!”
Kundalini is a joyous, energetic, and spiritual event… when it is positively welcomed.
Ending Fear
At its worst, blocking the energy can contribute to mental health difficulties. That blocking can be triggered by others – friends, family, religious or educational institutions, the medical establishment, even therapists who haven’t encountered this territory before. Many of my clients come to me referred by therapists who recognize their patients are experiencing something beyond their own expertise.
Kundalini can also arise unexpectedly, not always in a meditation retreat or sacred setting. It can arrive through drug use, extreme physical exertion, a medical emergency, or a near-death experience. In those cases, people often actively resist it, which can compound difficulties. But not every unplanned occurrence is chaotic. I’ve had clients feel Kundalini emerge after thirty years of meditation, during sex, or even on the golf course.
One client recalls hitting a perfect tee shot. As his body moved through space and the club connected with the ball, he felt “a whoosh of energy ascending through his body and through the top of his head”… his words. He immediately knew he’d hit the perfect shot. He stood, club resting behind his back, body twisting in the follow-through, and watched the drive land on the green. He stayed there, feeling the pleasure and delight dancing inside him… at least until his friends began to chide him: “It’s a great shot! Stop admiring it and get out of the way!”
THE KUNDALINI ENERGY: FOUR STATES TO UNDERSTAND
1 Active but not emergent. The energy is sensed or felt in the body. Present, but not yet rising.
2 Partially risen, with blocks. The energy has traveled part way up and become blocked by the energetic residue of past trauma. This is common. In a Soul Awareness session, we work to gently clear these blocks. Schedule a session →
3 Fully emergent. A flow of intense feeling from the base of the spine all the way through the crown chakra. The resulting sense of freedom and openness can feel like an entirely new world view.
4 Awakened, but with residue. An awakening has occurred, yet blocks, scars, or “debris” remain in the primary energy channel, the sushumna. This is addressable.
